How to Care for Your Air Conditioner During the Oman Winter

0

The scorching summer heat has finally broken, and Muscat is enjoying its beautiful, mild winter. For many homeowners, this means turning the AC off and opening the windows.

However, just because your air conditioner is taking a break doesn’t mean you should ignore it. In fact, the winter “off-season” is the perfect time to perform the deep maintenance that is impossible to do during the summer heat.

At Rubo Al Hail International Enterprise, as the leading HVAC wholesale dealer in Oman, we recommend using these cooler months to inspect, clean, and repair your system so it is 100% ready when the heat returns.

Here are our top 5 tips for winter AC care in the Sultanate.

1. The “Deep Clean” (Chemical Wash)

During summer, we rely on our ACs so much that we often delay deep cleaning. Now that you don’t need the cooling for a few hours (or days), it is time to wash away the summer’s dust.

  • The Problem: Sand and dust accumulate on the outdoor condenser coils, acting like a blanket that traps heat.
  • The Solution: Use a professional A/C Chemical Coil Cleaner. Unlike water alone, these chemicals foam up to push out deep-seated dirt and salt deposits.
  • Our Stock: We carry a range of acid and non-acid coil cleaners perfect for DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors.

2. Don’t Cover It—Clean Around It

In colder countries, people cover their AC units to protect them from snow. Do not do this in Oman.

  • Why? In our humid, coastal climate, covering a unit traps moisture inside, leading to rusted cabinets and corroded copper pipes. It also creates a warm home for pests.
  • What to do instead: Clear away any dry leaves, sand drifts, or debris that have gathered around the base of the outdoor unit to ensure good airflow.

3. Check the “Heating” Mode (Reverse Cycle)

Many split units in Oman are “Heat Pumps,” meaning they can warm your room on chilly January nights.

  • The Test: Switch your remote to “Heat” (often a sun symbol). If the unit blows cold air or doesn’t start, you might have a stuck reversing valve or low gas pressure.
  • The Fix: If you need to repair the heating function, we stock the solenoid coils and valves required to get the warm air flowing.

4. Inspect the Electrical Isolator

The outdoor “Isolator Switch” (the waterproof switch on the wall next to the AC) takes a beating from the sun all summer.

  • The Check: Look for cracks in the plastic or signs of burning. A weather-damaged switch is a major safety hazard, especially if we get winter rain.
  • The Replacement: If it looks brittle, replace it immediately. We stock high-quality, weather-resistant isolator switches that can survive the Gulf sun.

5. Change the Filters (Yes, Again)

You might think, “I’m not using the AC, why change the filter?”

  • The Reality: If you ran your AC hard in September and October, those filters are full of dust. Leaving dirty filters inside the unit for months allows bacteria and mold to grow on the evaporator coil.
  • The Fix: Replace or wash them now so your unit is fresh and odorless when you turn it on in spring.

Prepare Now, Relax Later

The biggest mistake we see is people waiting until April or May to fix their ACs. By then, technicians are busy, and prices go up.

Take advantage of the cool weather. Whether you need a new capacitor, a can of refrigerant gas, or just some cleaning supplies, Rubo Al Hail International Enterprise has you covered.
